- Visa situation for foreigners
Plus tips! Hope this helps and if you get laid off…know that you’re not alone and sending you my best wishes.
David
📌 Note: I talked to dozens of people who got laid off + legal professionals for research. I cannot speak about my own agreement for confidential reasons.

Why I choose a "simple" Dutch life (as an American) | Slow living

Coming from the US, I was used to "High Highs" but also "Low Lows"...but Dutch life is really about "The Simple Life." I used to want to move to a forest to get away from the hustle and bustle...but "simplicity" is actually built into the Dutch culture (IF you come from a fast-paced society like the US). Errr..... Most companies in the Netherlands provide health care, but you have to the premium? Is that something for expats? Because normally, YOU yourself are the one getting your health care insurance from health care insurance companies. It has nothing to do with the company you actually work for. Base health care is the same for everyone, and extra packages depend on the health care insurance companies. Discounts based on large groups/organisations are not allowed anymore, IIRC. Or did I understand you incorrectly at 7:46? Also, unemployment max time is NOT 38 months. It's 24 months. No matter how long you worked. This is the same if you're laid off because you've been ill for 2 years, or if you're fired because of other reasons.

I think it is accustomed to wear shoes inside because of the clean streets together with the frequent raining to drain out the majority of the dust and dirt. That said, I grew up in a home where we take our shoes off when entering the house, I also believe it is very respectful to do so.

I do not agree that it is hard to get a job in one European contry because of someones background, the most common reason is language barrier. It is mostly preferred people know the local language and not just English. Also Many European CEOs do work during vacations, maybe less but still not only in emergencies.

Hey David, Really sad to hear about your situation. Keep up the good work and you will get through this. Although there is some benefit for people coming from the most developed countries for job in Netherlands and off course working for 5 years in a permanent job, this privilege is not available for many people. I am personally badly impacted by the complex “employer” friendly rules. I had worked in a temporary contract where i was assured for 10 months that i was performing well, until when time came for renewal of my contract after an year, I had been kicked out with only 2 months to find a new job coz my visa was tied with my employment. There is no law to protect people in one year contract to stay and get a job with sponsor in Netherlands and its a sad reality that people in such situations have to crush their dreams and goals and leave the Netherlands. With that all the hopes of feeling the Netherlands as home also crashes badly. David, if you ever get a time, please research and make a video to protect people who go to Netherlands with one year contract job and their contract are not renewed for some reason of the employers. I wish that noone goes through the pain that i had to face & protect many future souls having beautiful dreams in their eyes to live their lives and make it big in the Netherlands.❤

Hey David, thank you so much for this video. I'm also part of the LGBTQ+ comunity and lived in the Netherlands (Utrecht) for 1 year and a half for my 2nd master's degree. I was deeply amazed about how safe it was for me to just be myself, especially about the fact that I could marry and/or adopt without any issues. There are so many things we take for granted, and when I came back to my home country, Italy - where LGBTQ+ marriage, adoption, and law protection are still illegal - I realized that I missed that freedom. That is, being treated as a human being, and having the chance of building a future family without the fear of getting harassed because of... existing. I really can't wait to come back in the NL or just move to any other country with better human rights. Meantime, please keep it up with this kind content and topics. We should never take anything for granted, and surely need more awareness on this matter. So... thank you again! Hope to see more videos like this in the future ❤

If so, I feel it’s a bit unfair that an expat would benefit from the certain (not all of them) social benefits if you get laid off just like the people do that do pay all of the income tax. I worked in a Hospital lab for 28 years in several states in the US and MANY people would NOT take vacations to get that time paid instead, or towards retirement. Some people died of heart attacks at work or right after retirement... I never did that. I took my time to travel. Some people in Miami had three jobs or two and a half... Crazy. Some others continue to work to their age 80's... I retired last year at 61, ALWAYS took my vacations to travel, and this August 2024 I am MOVING to France to study French, and truly doubt I would EVER come back to live here. Right now I live in Los Angeles, the MOST expensive city in the US. This is it... Enough abuse...

Also fell victim to a restructuring in Germany. Notice periods there are more generous with 6 months after 15 years worked. Health insurance the same as in NL (actually the Dutch system was introduced during the German occupation in the 1940s. After the war the Dutch simply kept it). One thimg one had to be cautious was the severance package. If one opts for more money instead of garden leave then unemployment benefits will not be paid during the time of the legal notice period and also reduces the months of benefit payments.

@@hidavidwen I think it's time to bring Niksen to the international level.-) as the Scandinavians did with their hugge.Hygge (/ˈh(j)uːɡə/, H(Y)OO-gə; Danish: [ˈhykə]; Norwegian: [ˈhŷɡːə]) is a word in Danish and Norwegian that describes a cozy, contented mood evoked by comfort and conviviality. As a cultural category with its sets of associated practices hygge has more or less the same meaning in both places and in both languages; however, the emphasis on hygge as a core part of Danish culture is a recent phenomenon, dating to the late 20th century. In the 21st century, the concept has also been familiarized abroad. Niksen+Hugge= happy life !

workers council isn't something that can decide on the decisions of how and why letting people go. its more on an advise basis rather than a deciding factor.

I lived/worked for a summer/early fallin San Francisco back in 2008. I, as a Gay American, feel that San Francisco and California as a whole are over-rated, too expensive and no where near as open minded as they're portrayed. I've lived in Québec for over 18 years, and even though were in New York and New England's sphere of influence, life is different. We actually take our 2 weeks off, we have legally mandated paid days off. As a diabetic, our National Healthcare Insurance (RAMQ- Régime d'Assurance Maladie du Québec) covers my insulin and ozympic. I would prefer medically assisted suicide over having to use for profit American "healthcare". I feel guilty sometimes because while the majority of Americans want Medicare for All, most Americans will never benefit from a system like we have in Québec. In 2000, I almost moved to the Netherlands. Ik spreek een bietje Nederlands. In 2006, I considered doing a trilingual Nederlands, Deutsch & Français immersion in Bruxelles. I ended up at Université de Montréal and finished my bachelors online with UMass Boston. Yadda yadda. Nederland is erg cool en Ik houw van Nederdutchies

Good day if you immigrate into the Netherlands and you're from another country besides the United States can you convert the Netherlands money to create a business in your home country that you're from?
